MDF or wood board replacement

Post by 68camaro »

Drain hole behind frig got clogged and in heavy rain water got under frig and damaged MDF board under fridge and side piece, damage not too bad but being fairly obsessive it is driving me crazy. Anyone know if the grain pattern MDF or wood is still available and if so where I can get it?

I seem to remember a post about a place in upped midwest had some some years ago but I cannot locate thread.

If answer is no, I am thinking of going to cabinet shop and asking them to get a couple boards with best match on grain and stain to match rest of interior, not sure if anyone tried this.

I have replaced a lot of damaged MDF under the fridge and stove and around the shower with solid oak pieces. A good cheap source for oak pieces is from oak furniture like drawer fronts or end tables that you might find at a thrift store. You can also buy small oak "project" boards at a hardware store. The matching finish to the MDF is a "golden oak" wood stain applied to the natural oak and a clear satin polyurethane varnish. The advantage of using solid oak vs MDF is that the oak will survive getting wet and will not swell up again like the MDF if you do have another leak.

My Concourse was missing the upper oak shelf above the pantry, so I made a new shelf from a piece of oak with the aforementioned stain and varnish. Here is what it looks like:

Clay, this is excellent, thank you. I look forward to getting rid of the MDF board.

I posted a thread some years ago about replacing the OEM MDF. The midwest home improvement store chain, MENARD'S, originally offered an MDF product line called "Country Oak" made by Dakota Brand. It perfectly matched the oak MDF from Chinook. Available in trim, moulding, boards and panels. Unfortunately it has since been discontinued at Menard's. I've also found similar "Oak" products in the large RV salvage warehouses that are popular here in northern Indiana.

Thanks, yours was the thread I was remembering but could not find. I'll try some online searches. Never heard of RV salvage warehouses, must be pretty cool places.

Yes, they are. Must be over half a dozen just here in the tri-county area alone. Most offer suppliers overstock, manufacturers extra parts inventory, new take-outs (vans), discontinued stuff, etc.
It's mostly new product, and not really used, "salvage". Pretty much everything to you would need to build a RV, camper, motorhome.
