Store switch

Post by Carolann22 »

I am replacing the house batteries soon. But until then I thought if I put the house battery switch in store position the vehicle battery would be protected. It was not. It was dead this am.
Is the store switch messed up or am I ?

You may have some drain on the chassis battery even when you put it on store. It does not disconnect both the chassis and the coach battery. For example, you can easily drain out your chassis battery if you leave your beam on, or door opened, and some radio may drain it down gradually. Your chassis battery also may be aged. I will charge it all the way up with a battery charger, and take it down to auto part store to have it load-tested.

I disconnect engine negative cable even with store "off" and my kill switch on two coach batteries "off", I still get a small parasitic draw on engine battery. Not sure from where and it takes a couple weeks to drain battery but a little prevention saves dead or low battery.

One obvious electronic that is running is the digital clock. The current draw is very small, however. The newer vehicles have dozens of computers (micro controllers) that the drain on the chassis battery is much more significant. I would either disconnect the cable or put it on a trickle charger if I leave my rig on storage for more than a month or two.
