7.3 Powerstroke

We have a 1997 Concourse with the 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel motor. Only 200, 000 miles.

The motor has developed a "clacking" noise at idle.

My Ford dealership was unable to diagnose the cause but opined it was time for a new motor.

Has anyone gone this route and how successful was the fix?

Thank you

Do you have a video of the clacking? Not to be a smart ass, but don't 7.3's clack a lot to begin with? Personally, I'd see it as a time to repower with a different motor.

I don't trust dealerships anymore. Is there any way or getting a sound bite of the engine noise? I would be surprised if your engine was mortally wounded, but lots of things can cause clacky noises in the 7.3l. Any addition info? did the noise start out of nowhere?

A dealer opining for a new motor now there's a shock. A second opinion is certainly in order.

If you bring your rig to a RV shop, they will suggest you getting a new RV. I would get a 2nd op too.

I don't buy it. These motors are known for going forever. There is a documented case of one goin 1.8 million miles without rebuild. You need a really good diesel mechanic. Could be just a bad injector.

Hey Mark. I always like your posts.

Just curious ... what makes a bad injector cause a clacking noise at idle? Misfire in that one cylinder? If it's a bad injector, do you prefer to clean 'em or replace?

My first guess would have been the bottom end, but I guess it's pretty strong in the 7.3.

Call PowerStroke Specialities at 770 931-4070 Ask for Bill or Mike They also have a web site with videos at powerstrokehelp.com These guys are great and I have had work completed by them. First off the 7.3 engine is indestructible and you might have a sticky injector. Try some Archoil on your next oil change it probably will clear up.
