Under hood "Smart" solenoid?

Was poking around under the hood of my 2000 Concourse today checking fluid levels and such and noticed what appears to be the solenoid that protects the chassis battery from discharging to house. Seems odd to have two large terminals exposed to possible accidental contact (short).
(pic attached, large red terminals)
Is this normal, or is mine missing some kind of a shield?

Thanks for any input.
This forum has been a great help for me already and I hope to be able to contribute in the future.

That's the way they came, unfortunately. Many car battery terminal is not protected either back then, I guess, so it is not out of extraordinary. However, I agree with you that a protective caps will be a good thing to have on these.
