Generator & Electrical issues

Post by Dadams6612 »

Ok don't laugh, I'm not quite familiar with my 2003 Chinook Concourse just yet,
While having issues with my generator , and being plugged into power , I tried to start my generator now none of my outlets work nor will the fridge switch to AC . Any suggestions?

Have you checked for tripped circuits at the distribution panel?

There is a circuit breaker on the genset itself. Check that in addition to what HoosierB said.

So everything works on shore power, and then you disconnect from it, and the generator starts and run fine. The issue is that there is no AC?

Some units have ground fault outlets. (One tripped outlet can kill multiple)
Good luck.

My only GFCI outlet is on the bathroom door wall next to the rear entry.

I think all the AC outlets daisy-chain to the GFIC outlet that you see next to the bathroom door, so if it tripped, all the outlets down stream from it (like the one outside) will has no power. However, the fridge is plug into a separate branch, and I assume everything works if you plug the rig onto shore power (you never explicitly said if the problem goes away if on shore power....), so it is something other than/in addition to the GFIC.

If everything is working on shore, but not on genset, and you check all the AC breakers, and you do get AC out from the genset, then I would pull out the brown box under the kitchen sink, and check for the generator output there. It is possible that the automatic transfer switch (a module on the piggy-back on the brown box) is bad. It is a pretty rare item that needs to be replace, however. This is 110V AC, so be careful.

So I checked the breakers, all work except the outlet breakers, so everytime I turn the breaker on it kits the gfic outlets back off. So I replaced the gfci outlet with a new one, still same problem.

Generator still not working but the fuel has turned orange, after replacing the filter and pump I'm sure it will need some carb. work. Still trying to figure out my electrical problems, now fridge wont switch to AC as well. One issue after another

Sorry, I misunderstood you to think that your electric problem only exists when you used the generator. Did not realize the problem is there with the rig hooked up with shore. So forget about everything I said above.

How about the microwave? Does the control lights up when you plug in your rig to shore? When you have shore power, you will have the microwave, the converter (and battery charger) , the fridge will switch to AC mode if it is on auto, the rooftop air conditioning, and obviously all the outlets.

If the GFIC pops and you are sure it is not defective, maybe there is a bad wiring down stream from it. Check the outside outlet and make sure it is not shorted, wet, or came loose. If it still pops, then disconnect the wires going downstream from the GFIC, and see if it still pops. It should not pop if there nothing downstream, and nothing is plug into the GFIC. Disconnect power, and reconnect one node at a time, and turn the power on, and the last thing that you connected is the culprit. There is a diagram on the Chinook manual with the AC diagram, and it should help you with figure out some of the information you need.

Wow, I came home from work tonight, went directly to the Chinook, plugged her in , flipped the breakers now everything works.... still a little worried, taking it to the shop to have it checked out Friday.
